OPEN-DUMPS IN NIGERIA

2020-01-14 04:32

Open-dumps of waste is still very common in many parts of Nigeria today even in the federal capital territory, Abuja open-dumps is still found relevant and also it is the major way in which waste of the people are basically disposed.

Our organization had severally reacted against open-dumps of waste in most of our communities’ even leaflets and posters had severally been produced and circulated throughout the major towns in Abuja. We had made it known severally that there is a need for health education of the mass majority of the people in our communities, but the government itself has little or no concern as regards this unsanitary habits of the people. People should be made known the reasons why sanitary waste disposal is very imperative. Open-dumps have major disadvantages, however, especially in heavily polluted areas; toxic chemicals can filter down through a dump and contaminate groundwater. The filters through a dump landfill are called leachate and the dumps may also generate methane, a flammable and explosive gas produced when organic waste decomposed under anaerobic condition.

The acts against open-dumps are not only the responsibility of Greenwaves Environmental Consult, but it should be of general concern; our actions can further protect or destroy the environment. Government should include it in their political agendas, the conservation of our natural resources and sanitary waste disposal for a healthy and pollution free environment is a basic necessity and it should be a responsibility of a serious government.

We hereby, urge individuals, government organizations, Schools, Radio and Television Stations, Corporate Bodies, and NGOs to support our campaign against open-dump in Nigeria and also do more on their own to promote and protect our environment.
